Background

UNITAR’s Women’s Leadership Programme (WLP) works to promote gender equality and women’s full and effective participation and leadership at all levels of political decision-making. It mainstreams a need to raise the profile of women and integrate gender sensitivity to the work undertaken in multilateral working environments and in the work of the UN more broadly.

The WLP is providing opportunities for women to build personal leadership skills and learn from women in leadership positions across a variety of sectors. The Programme’s main objectives are to:

  • Promote collaboration between UN Agencies, governments and other strategic partners;
  • Support the implementation of SDG5 "To achieve Gender Equality and Empower all Women and Girls";
  • Deliver opportunities for women in government to build leadership skills and capacities and to act as multipliers at the national level;
  • Emphasise the role of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, celebrating the progress on women’s empowerment.

Furthermore, the Programme is commited to connecting its alumni in maintaining the strong network formed between participants during workshops.

Learning Objectves

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Critically assess what characterises a strong leader and appraise what is meant by charismatic and visionary leadership;
  • Strengthen personal confidence and direction as leaders;
  • Employ tools to build high-priority skills, such as networking, influencing others, negotiation, collaborative leadership, and public speaking;
  • Understand how these skills may be applied to strengthen participation and personal performance in multilateral cenference and decision-making processes.Content and Structure

Content and Structure

The workshop is designed to equip women leaders with the skills, knowledge and abilities to take executive decisions by seizing the critical opportunities for change. Participants will become aware of the influence they can have on others (both intended and unintended), obtain insights into their personality and learn how it impacts on their leadership style.

The workshop draws on the latest leadership models and innovative interactive training methods that require open-minded approaches to leadership, encouraging participants to explore their leadership styles and characteristics as leaders.

Methodology

The workshop will be highly interactive and dynamic incorporating group activities to enhance personal learning in a comprehensive results-based approach to professional capacity building.

Facilitators will provide a dynamic learning environment, balancing both leadership theory, practical exercises, case studies, video recordings, self-assessments, group discussions and facilitated dialogues. The workshop will aim to inspire by including interventions and remarks from highly motivational women in the field of diplomacy, through an armchair discussion.

Target Audience

The workshop is designed for diplomats, delegates, government officials and senior managers who seek to reflect on or further develop their leadership in mulitlateral settings.

Applications from the private sector, NGO’s and Acamedia are welcome and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
